I want to improve my voice but don’t know where to start. What’s the correct way to structure how to do singing practice? Should I focus on warm-ups, breathing exercises, or specific songs first?
Thanks for writing in. Im excited that you’re interested and sound committed to bettering your vocal technique. O
First, before getting into warmups or exercises, it’s important to know how to correctly use your voice. Now there really isn’t one formula that fits all. Our voices are so unique to who we are. Like a thumbprint! But there are some techniques that are definitely a foundation for all. One of them, as you correctly point out, is breathing. Knowing how to power your voice, with the right quality of breath.
A lot of people don’t use their breath correctly. Your breath, is the power source!
Next, it’s important to understand where your voice lives in your body, and how it actually functions as it passes through your vocal folds. Some of this, you can read on line. But a lot of it, is just about you sitting by yourself, closing your eyes and bringing awareness to it. The embodied voice.Next, is knowing the mechanics of the muscles that help create sound, and how to use the right technique for you! What’s right for someone else may not always be right for you.
Assuming you’ve got all of this right, building a toolbox of vocal exercises, and practising them every day along with a drone (I like the tanpura! Which trains us to be so much more intuitive than the piano or any other instrument)
Most importantly, if you have the ability to study with a good teacher, you’d have solid guidance to walk you through this. Good luck!
